Stained glass decals
The decalcomania is the technology of printing on surfaces like glass, ceramics and porcelain. Stained glass decals could be cold or hot – when the image is baked into the glaze, providing strength and stability of the stained glass decal.

The decalcomania is the technology of printing on different surfaces - glass, ceramics, porcelain and earthenware, metal, plastic, and even nails with special ceramic paints. The technology is also called decals - the name stuck in the end of XIX century, when the decals were very popular decorations.
There are two types of decal application: a water-slide decal and a dry one. Dry (reverse) type means printing an inverted image, and the subsequent transport of the product. This technique is used very rarely in cause of the high cost of consumables.
Water-sliding (wet type) transfer of printed decal is more popular, where the image is printed on a special paper, and then soaked under water and transferred to the object. Depending on the continued firing, decals divided into hot and cold.
The cold decal is a less durable one, so after the transfer of the image is covered with varnish. However, this method is suitable for surfaces that are not subjected to the hard firing. In the water, this image is peeled from the paper and transported to the stained glass, dried, and then it is finished with a varnish.
The hot type means the image, which was transferred to the stained glass, is fixed on the surface of the product by high temperature firing. Hot decals are a durable product, because the image penetrates the base material, and it is baked there. Such a method is used in the manufacture of glassware, because it is capable to make the image not only on smooth surface, but also on the curved or convex surface, for example, on the bottom or the handle of mugs.
With a proper firing in a muffle furnace, the image is baked into the glaze, providing strength and stability of the stained glass decal.
Durability of the pattern, which applied with the decal method, depends on the used material and the basis. For example, the paints penetrate the structure of porcelain and earthenware, but in case of glass, it is baked only on the surface.
If you want decals are suitable for use for a long time, it is necessary to ensure normal conditions of storage. Images should be kept in an upright position, thus avoiding a pressure. Room temperature, where the stained glass decals store must be from 20 to 25 °C, humidity - less than 60%. It is important to avoid clumping and wet decals. Subject to these requirements, the image would be suitable for use for another 5-7 years. Qualitatively drawing the image will not crack; it does not fade in the decade.
Such paints for decal manufacturing are called ceramic paints. They can be colorless and color (glossy and matte), colored metal pastes, pearl and fluorescent one to create some special effects. In any case, all the colors are food-grade and health friendly, because decal image is often painted on the inner side of the dishes that have a contact with food. In addition, the paints resistant to abrasion do not fade and have a quality certificate.
